The Bearsnoozzze started life as a bed surround that we designed and
made in 2002 in response to hazard warnings issued by the MDA(Medical Devices
Agency). Serious incidents had occurred involving bed rails used on domestic
divan and metal framed beds that had led to injury and death by asphyxiation
after entrapment of the head or neck.
At that time the use of electric profiling beds wasn’t as prevalent
as it is now and most of the bed occupants we were involved with were in
domestic beds.
We worked on a surround trying eliminated all the gaps that would create a hazard.
The main problem areas were:
> Between the horizontal bedrail bars
> Between the bottom of the rails and the mattress
> Between the headboard and where the rails start
> Between the footboard and where the rails end
By designing a surround with a base sheet that is attached to all four sides we managed to eliminate all the gaps.
As time went on electric profiling beds were being used more and we designed the base sheet in such a way that it would accommodate the profiling action.
The Bearsnoozzze Bed developed from the bed surround. It is a complete package including mattress and is a complete safe solution for children and adults.
The split side was developed originally for a client with Huntington’s disease. It meant they could be cared for without dropping down the whole side.
We are very often asked to make see through sides. We have always been reluctant as it is very difficult to make a see through environment without creating other hazards. Vinyl or mesh sides can create a hammock effect if they are not kept really taut. The window solution doesn’t give a completely see through side but then it doesn’t compromise the safety aspect and did create a lot of interest at Naidex.
